  1. 1. Which Track(s) should host the 24-hour in 2018?

    • VIR
      37
    • Nelson Ledges
      14
    • Why not both?
      27

The 2018 schedule has Nelson Ledges as the 24 hour race in 2018, and VIR as an 8+8. For the same price. Chumpcar Facebook media claimed that the 24 will move around, but this is a classic! I think the VIR 24 is the defining experience of Chumpcar in the East.

I'm not saying Nelson Ledges wouldn't be fun, but don't diminish what we have at VIR. 100 cars plus a wait list. Nelson Ledges is capped at 60. That's not the full 24 hour experience!

Watch video of that track. It's narrow. It's fast. It's got history. But it is not VIR.

Tell Mike we want the the VIR 24 hour to be 24 hours in 2018!

I wouldn't mind Nelson Ledges as it's 10hr closer for me, but man.. the facilities of VIR.... the lodge was just too convenient.

I'd say why not both, but I can't see both events filled with 95 cars... it'll end up being one or the other for alot of teams

NL will be capped at around 60 cars would be my guess.

Oh ok.. well.. I'm just saying... if there's 2  24hr events available.. chances are the teams will pick and choose which one to attention... and not both... props who will attend both. We might be crazy enough though....

You can't kill off VIR 24 right after you get me hooked on it!!  I'm glad I can say I got to run in a 24 hour race, but I really want to be able to say I ran in like 20 of them.  I can remember driving in the dark on a soaking wet track thinking "WTF am I doing?" to only then 10 mins later think "OMG this is a blast".  Don't kill the VIR 24

I emailed Mike as well petitioning for the VIR event.

at this point, it's an institution of Chumpcar in my mind.

NL is a no go for me, I don't have the logistics ability to support a 24 hour race 9 hours from home.  Hard to get enough crew that far away.

Baloney.... I went down with one other guy.. and 3 drivers.... total of 5 people in our pits. It worked.. exhausting, but it worked..

Yeh, so we can do 21 hours of laps under FCY.....

I presume you were there in May. LOL

According to Mike's latest Red Flag video he is open to the idea of doing both as a 24 if the demand is there and has the ability to make the change if needed.

We have never done a 24 before so seeing that we can do one at Nelson, which is 20 miles from us, is a big incentive.

I can also see the reasoning behind a double 8 at VIR on the full course. Some teams may not want to do a 24 but do want to drive that track so there is some appeal.

Maybe they could combine the two. Start the entire field. Have a checker/full course yellow at the 8 hour mark for 2 laps with pit lane closed except for cars finishing the 8.

Throw a full course yellow again the next day 8 hours before the end of the 24 and let the 8 hour guys blend in.

Actually the hard cap per the rules is 75, but Mike would prefer to keep it to 60.  So that's a great guess, Andrew!
