Greetings from sunny New Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!  Brand new here, I just heard about chump car racing last week from my brother in law, and it looks like we are going to start from scratch and put a team together!   A little background, I have raced lots of stuff over the years,  lots of kart racing, motocross, desert racing on bikes, off-road trucks in Mexico, crotch rocket drag racing.  Never road courses in cars!  My brother in law has done LeMons racing, so he knows a lot more about this stuff!

I will be the mechanic, and fabricator, he will be the financier.  I have built several off-road race trucks, so I know my way around tubing benders and welders, and have worked on all kinds of stuff over the years.

In preliminary research, it looks like we are leaning toward 94-95 mustang gt.  It scores low on the VPI and will leave room for some minor suspension work, and cooling system upgrades.

We have found a possible car, I have a few questions.

It is a 95 mustang gt with a blown motor.  If I put a 302 from a late model explorer in, will that count as an engine swap?   Does the car have to have the actual matching #'s engine it came with, or can you replace it with a similar motor, of similar specs?

Anyway, I have read a little bit so far, I plan on doing research for at least several months before getting a car, and starting the build.  Our goals are #1 have fun safely, #2 build a reliable car than can finish races #3 of course we wouldn't be racing if we weren't just a little bit competitive!

Welcome New Mexico.

The Explorer is a swap and will add 50 points to your car.  Zero concerns about serial numbers.  Talking about Mustangs on the forum will bore the BMW crowd to death, PM me if you want to discuss in detail.

Welcome! I had the opportunity to drive an explorer swapped foxbody at Daytona earlier this year and it almost made me forget what a BMW was! Spend as many points on handling and stuff the biggest tires under it that you can. Not sure about sn95 cars but you may want to switch to a fuel cell for the extra capacity. Definitely a fun car to drive!

Thanks for the replies!

Still have not found a car.

I am pretty sure we are going with a 94-95 sn95 mustang gt.

Few questions.

Stock fuel capacity on these is 15.4 gallons.

I have found a 16 gallon, or 18 gallon fuel cell, will I be disqualified for running an 18?

Only if the capacity is over 17.4 gallons.  Generally speaking, an 18 gallon cell will be under 18 gallons when you have the foam in it.  If you are that concerned about it, you can throw a 1/2 gallon displacement block in the cell to bring you down to the required limit.

To save costs use a circle track 22 gallon fuels cell from Jegs or Summit. Block it down to 17 gallon. And use a Holly fuel mat on your pump. The bigger fuel cell will give you options.

Yes the Explorer motor will be 50 points. If you use the short block with the E7 94 or 95 heads there will be no points. It is the GT40 heads that is different from the Mustang. If you are handy with head porting you can get the E7 real close to the GT40 heads.

We also run a Mustang. As Ron stated email us if you have questions.

Fuel Safe has a 17 gallon Enduro fuel cell. We have one and it works well.

5 gallons of displacement blocks will cost as much as the fuel cell!

Pintodave found ping pong balls do not degrade iirc.

And yes, what they charge for blocks is insane. Glad I won't need any.
