wvumtnbkr
Well, our weekend didn't go as well as planned. We led for a few laps on Saturday morning and then disaster struck. The car wouldn't accelerate. I knew it was fuel related because the afr was simply dash dash dash.... I pull into the pit out lane of the secondary pit road to get off the track. I back down the secondary pit lane to get behind the guardrail so the rest of the field can keep racing. I missed hitting the inside guardrail by millimeters.... I did not see it at all! The safety crew came and opened the gate and allowed me to drive back to the paddock to identify the issue. Turns out, we made an error on wiring in our new brake duct fans and when 1 of them shorted out, it took out the fuel pump circuit... 1 cut wire and a new fuse and were back on track. Between waiting for the gate to get open, diagnosing and fixing the issue, we were off track about 25 mins. Suddenly, we had a test day on our hands.... We all went for fast lap. 2 of us got down in the 2, 04 range. I think that is pretty damn good! Sunday starts and the first stint of the race is amazing! I moved up through the field into the top 5 or 6. The top group was battling lap after lap with each position changing several times a lap. Twice, I got a big run on the Saab and twice the Saab went for the apex and made me go through the grass. No matter, gwr got by the Saab and started to check out. I was still battling with the Saab, troxel racing, RVA, and the swapped fit..... until I spun in turn 1 right in front of troxel and rva. They both missed me, thankfully! I turned a 2:15 on the lap I spun and caught back up to the lead pack in 2 laps. Then a caution came out after a few more laps. We pitted from the top 5. We had a faster pit stop than the rest of the top 5 except for gwr. Tyler goes out and lays down a pretty good first lap. Then, the rear shock decided it didn't want to hold the spring anymore. The perch fell down over the shock and allowed the corner to collapse. Two 12 minute stops later and we had it fixed. The rest of the day was just seeing how high we could finish. 14th.... 10 laps down.... 3

Fitsbain
Had fun. Spent the weekend cooking and passing out things I cooked. Closed down the paddock on Friday about midnight, and Saturday at 1. Got my first stint being the fuel guy, actually all weekend. Think we went 10th over all on Saturday. Sunday was not as good.
Guest E. Tyler Pedersen
Thanks to @wvumtnbkr I was able to drive the car this weekend. I first drove with Rob at Watkins Glen and was about 4 seconds off his pace. It is very humbling when Rob and I drive together. I was as fast or faster than him in my car when we drove with me. In his car it is just the opposite. Friday at practice I was able to get some laps in the wet which the car just stuck and it was a well setup car. On Saturday after our fuel pump issue I was able to get in the car and have a 1:50 minute stint. It was great battling with cars and I didn't get passed on track once. I was able to lay down a 2:07 which was 3 seconds slower than Rob, but I stayed consistent. On Sunday I was prepared to be more aggressive and put down faster laps. I felt comfortable in the car and was on a good pace then the rear gave out on me. I was getting wheel spin in about every corner and told Rob that I could drive around it, just would have slower times. Brought the car in and they were able to get it fixed. I was able to get down to a low 2:06 on Sunday which I was pretty happy with considering Rob put down a low 2:05. We had 3 great drivers with great pace, just was taken out by a small failure. Thanks to all the teams for some great racing, thanks to the volunteers and thanks to Dana and his crew. Really awesome event with a lot of friends I hadn't seen in a while. Thanks to @bbaker480 for bringing the RV along which made it way nicer and easier to be at the track. This was the first event as a married man with my wife by my side. Looking forward to getting together again in 2018! We were in car #556 with GMS. @wvumtnbkr's car
Hi_Im_Will
We had a rough weekend. Saturday: Clogged radiator causing overheating (explains the stupid high gingerman temps) Car spun in front of us, hit them and screwed up the splitter clogged fuel vent line caused a leak Some other yet-undiagnosed intermittent misfire on left hand corner exits (probably something else screwy in the fuel system) Luckily the new paint survived and everybody got some practice. Sunday: Started at the front Ran away, set some fast laps Lead over/deficit to each car we were tracking was correct given stops completed for us to be battling for the lead in the last half hour. We have to take an extra pit stop for fuel, but as of ~1:30 we were on track to make up the time by the end of the race. Heavy stumble, car undriveable. Limp to the pits, check all the grounds, wiggle all the wires, check the fuel system (had been problematic yesterday) nothing. Turn it off, turn it on again, and the problem is gone. F**k. Always try cycling the ignition for EMS problems. My failure to do so on the track cost us 6 laps. Screw around for the rest of the day and try to get some practice in, and diagnose some minor misses when the car is low on fuel. Finish 11th overall. Nowhere near the performance we had at Gingerman, and not what we need going into AMP. But at least we can be done screwing with the damn paint job: Also, we had it relatively easy. The 234 next to us blew up their engine in practice, Hounddogs lost an engine early Saturday, Krueger lost an engine Sunday after turning some impressive laps, @red0's super fast civic got totaled, Pal was dealing with electrical gremlins all weekend, and a ton of other teams had major issues. This race seemed to have an incredibly high attrition rate.

wvumtnbkr
Correct. I don't remember the specifics of the incident, but the car is not good. Strangely, the car doesn't look that bad from the outside. When you look inside, the floor is buckled and bent and torn in different directions. The surge tank is sitting a few inches higher than it was.... it's bolted to the floor..... still. Such a shame. Awesome car!

Not sure on details, other than got tapped on the rear fender, spun into the wall on the back straight.

On two consecutive laps I watched the car directly in front of me botch 16 and spin across the track towards the wall on the inside. It was like a glitch in the matrix or something. I thought for sure that I was going nuts because the sequence was identical both laps.

Racer28173
Hey guys - can you edit your posts and add in your team name? I was on Chumpcast and/or Race Monitor enjoying the race over the weekend, but I can't connect the stories above with the teams I was tracking on Race Monitor. Thanks for a great race - made my otherwise boring day much more interesting (I was working)

shutupracing
"Exciting" weekend for Shut Up Racing (car 234). This was our last event of the year and it certainly got off to an interesting start. I got stuck at work on Friday and the rest of the team headed down ahead of me to get some testing in and learn the track since it was new for all of us. I arrived around 5:15 and one of our members was out on track turning laps. Pretty much as soon as I get out of my car he comes over the radio saying something about having no power. He coasts down pit lane and then gets towed up to the garage. Crank the key.....slloooooowwwww crank. Eventually no crank at all, block is seized. We still aren't sure what happened and it will be a few weeks before I tear into it. So, it's decision time and we decide that we will send three members back to NY to retrieve the old motor (5 hrs each way, apprx). While another member and myself starting tearing the old motor out. Motor comes out pretty quick and the new motor arrives around 4:00am if I had to guess. We proceed to install the motor in the dark since the power had "conveniently" gone out. On that note, that will be the first and last time I do an engine install with flashlights. It sucks. Finally get things buttoned up around 8:30 and fire it up to get it out on grid. Race goes ok until a left front wheel bearing failed. Got it fixed and back on track to get some valuable seat time in for all the drivers. 25th so not very notable. Sunday went well. Top 10 result which was our goal. Anything inside 10th we were considering to be a better than expected result. 9th overall, 7 without EC. Definitely gotta say thanks to chumpcar and all the staff and competitors for a good season. For the most part I believe we met our goals and learned a lot. Have a few things to implement for 2018 and hopefully get some more pace. Driver development, which only comes with experience, will be a big chunk of that. Congrats to all the winners, definitely some very fast cars out there and minus a few cars I would say excellent driving by all.
Segeltorp
It was for sure a mixed bag for us. We had a ton of fun when the car was working right, but we still haven't got the gremlins fixed yet. We thought we had, the car ran great at Mid-Ohio and at a recent track day, but both Sat and Sun we eventually got sidelined with electrical problems. I started Sat at the back of the pack and was up to mid-pack when after 10 laps at the end of the back straight I suddenly inconveniently enough discovered that all brake fluid had disappeared through the left rear caliper... That hairpin is not good for full speed, so it was a hairy moment both for me and I'd think also for the 318ti that I tried to avoid T-boning. By more luck than skill I got the Wagon sideways, scrubbed off enough speed that the BMW just escaped and that I could recover once I got out in the grass. It must have looked wild! It certainly got my heart rate up a bit... Fixed the brakes, got back out and did some good laps until the engine suddenly pretty much stopped running. It was like flipping a switch, the AFM meter got crazy and the engine barely ran. I limped back to the pits, we swapped distributor, throttle body, ECU... With the new ECU it fired right back up and ran great again. Peter went out and did 10 laps or so before coming back in with a bad misfire. We thought we had killed also the new ECU so we loaded up the car and towed it back to his house for analysis. To unfix what we had done out at the track we swapped back to all the former parts except the ECU, and it fired right back up again and ran perfectly. Great - Sunday will be perfect. Unfortunately Peter wasn't feeling well that day, so he wanted me to start also Sunday, and I had a great time for 45 minutes until there was an unfortunate event on the front straight where a flat black e36 was trying to sneak on the inside of the blue Civic Coupe in that left hander before the start/finish line but tapped the rear bumper on the Civic. The Civic driver managed to save the situation without going into the barriers, but then came over hard right and hit me in the side. The Civic driver was very classy and came on over apologizing, but looking at the video from my car I can't say that there was much apologizing for - the fact that he wasn't seeing me out on the right was hardly to be expected as he was trying to save the situation with the BMW on the left. We were lucky, it only cost us a rim and tire and we couldn't find any other damage to the car. I got back out again with a new wheel on, and after a cautious lap or two I had a great time again. Did a good pitstop and sent Peter out, but after about an hour he came back in saying the car was misfiring again and that he was feeling really sick. I tried to get back out to see how the car was doing, but already heading out from the pits it was evident that the engine was running terribly so rather than trying to go the whole lap I pulled off at the back entrance and headed back to the paddock. With Peter sick, and the car not running right we threw in the towel, loaded up and headed home. Still had a great time, many thanks to all of you friendly folks out there and a big thank you to Dana and the whole Chump crew for yet another very well run event! I will do some video editing, and will post some links when I have uploaded the juicy parts :-) 1

Kentite
What a great weekend. Nice to see such a big car count for a non “premier” event. We managed to take the checkers both days, which is a huge step forward for our car. We had mechanical issues that did cost us about 45 minutes each day but everyone got to get plenty of seat time and the car was fantastic when we were on track. We did have to back off the pace the second half of Sunday to ensure a finish but we still managed to make a couple fun passes right after the final caution. Managed to run 3 seconds faster than last year and I feel like it has another 3 seconds in it after looking at our lap data. It will be nice to go into our off season focusing on refining the car rather than chasing the same problems that have plagued us for so long. Bummed to see a couple great cars meet their demise this weekend, but I’m sure the teams will be back sooner than later. Thanks to Dana and the entire Chumpcar staff and to PIRC and it’s people for such a fun weekend. Edited October 9, 2017 by Kentite
