We booked rooms right outside the track (Hampton Inns Leeds) a month ago for ~$109-ish a night.  Winds up being $135 a night after tax, another tax, and yet another tax on a previous tax.

That's odd the price jumped almost $70 a night in one month

What area does my team need to book in order to be walking distance to the better bars and such?

Colonnade area (280) has a few places to eat nearby that you can walk to, Black Market Bar is right there, and in the morning it's a 15 min ride to the track.  You can stay downtown Birmingham in the 5 points area to be around a bunch of bars if you'd like, about 20-25 mins from the track.  Anywhere else in Birmingham I don't think I would recommend.  Most of the hotels on 280 will be within driving distance and possibly walking distance to eateries or bars.  We have uber/lyft here in town and never have surge pricing if you really want to go exploring.  Avondale is a good place to get some great food and has a bunch of great bars around.

Feel free to message me with any questions you guys might have about certain hotels or other areas of town.  I live right by the Colonnade area and have lived in Birmingham for 30+ years.  Happy to help anyone who needs it.

Yea, sounds about right for Birmingham....and yet the local government is still broke.

My wife is staying in Trussville at a Hampton Inn.  I booked it tonight.  It was $101 with taxes for the prepaid in full rate.  Some stuff nearby.  Only ~6 minutes from the track exit on I20.  I'll be staying in the hauler on Friday.  Depending on how things go Saturday, I'll either be staying with her or in the fart box, er, I mean hauler with the rest of the team.

As far as camping, I think you can use a gas grill in the paddock and charcoal in the camping area...Or maybe I got that backwards.  I think you can get power from the pit outlets for a nominal fee.

Thinking about bringing the camper, any experiences from you guys camping at Barber?

I camp there all the time and have for years, like stated other responses there is 30 and 50 amp power on the 2nd and 3rd levels (15/20 also), and 20 and 50 along the hot pit wall if you have an extension cord long enough to reach across the cold pit and through the fence to your rig but it takes a lengthy cord.  No issues, I prefer that to driving in and out.  I have never stayed in the RV parking lot across the road from the paddock but it looks nicely equipped.
