Photo hosting solution for forum upload limit

Recommended Posts

Photo and media content is part of what makes a great forum, whether it's relative content or just goofing off content. Active members are probably running into the issue with running out of storage space. If you haven't yet and post images, you probably will run into this eventually.

So far I've found 2 solutions. Neither are 1-click easy, but they are good workarounds.

Solution 1:  Compress the crap out of your pics before posting to reduce the size. I found a handy web based tool to do that: http://compressimage.toolur.com/   upload, compress, resave smaller file

Solution 2: This one is pretty trick. Using a Google Drive folder as a  hosting solution. Of course for security purposes, you'll want a dedicated folder. I created one called "Champ forum", which I then made public. After that I found the side gdurl.com to create a permalink of the pic URL from Drive, then can be posted as regular HTML image.    <img src="permalinkURLhere">

Takes a few steps but no more issues.

Any resident web experts with anything easier?

Google Photos  - https://photos.google.com/

Posting images with a Google Photo's URL is fairly easy but there are a couple of steps for it to work correctly.

The Trap for young players is to make sure the web address (URL) is a link direct to the image and not to the Google Photos page containing the image.

This is the common error that results in a failed image. Google wants to promote itself to your friends so the default 'Share' link that they provide is to a Google page containing the image and not a direct link to the image. This default page link will not embed the image on any forum nor any web page.

So... if your image URL looks like this;

Code:
https://goo.gl/photos/N1eciVaGNYbWjLtn8

the image will not display.

The fix
1. Open Google Photos in Chrome or Firefox on a PC* or Safari on a Mac
2. Browse to the photo you wish to share on these forums.
3. Click the photo to enlarge it.
4. Right click and copy the image URL (Chrome = Copy image address, Firefox = Copy image location).

* this fix will not work with MS Internet Explorer or MS Edge.

Your image URL will now be very long and random looking, something like this;

Code:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/TylEip-yDBfU4e4EPvMG4Cmc2N8BoeGdI5p_jhHeJ5YMtvNH7muDEZyn-sR-xQAxfXoR5Lpckzr4ETliD

There doesn't seem to be a limit as to how many photos you can put in a gallery when you're in your profile page. So, As a workaround I've had pretty good luck creating a gallery and posting pictures there. then when I'm in the forum i pick the button below that says " insert other media" and pick " insert existing attachment."   That takes you to your pictures in your gallery. There's one more pick where you choose between post attachments and gallery images. Pick gallery images and all the pictures you've placed in your gallery will be available to insert into your post.

Sweet, this is a direct copy/paste of address from google photos, @Bill Strong is on to something using Google Photos instead of Drive

Edit: can y'all see the picture? Trying to figure out if I need to change any album settings in Photos. Doesn't appear to be a way to get back to the photo album from the link of the posted picture, but I'll probable create a separate "champ pics" folder anyways.

The other question:

The google photos link, that is easy to generate from the laptop/pc (per Bill's post), but can that be done mobile? I am not seeing it. I'm going to edit this and try to paste the link generated from Photos on my phone to see if it works.

Edit: nope doesn't work from mobile, just posts link...

So what happened with this?

You used to be able to directly upload pics and post. Now, my "Max total size"is "0.02MB", which is worthless. With the name change, did Champ start cheaping out on what they want to pay for hosting costs?

Yup, same here, I was going back and deleting a bunch of old stuff to make some room, but at some point there will be stuff I don't want to delete (like build pics, etc). File compression does help, but again, eventually it will all add up.

I just thought maybe that was champcars way of telling me they didn't want any more of my crappy pictures 🤣

Whether it works or not, I'd hesitate to use it. I'm sure Bill has the limit where it's at for a reason. You pay for hosting by bandwidth and storage space. The more pictures hosted by the forum, the more it costs to run. If, as a group, we're nowhere near the amount already paid for, then it's not a big deal.

You're just about correct for the 2.25" tube that we used, which matches the inlet size on the fuel cell top plate. It makes a straight run from the stock fill location behind the rt rear wheel to the cell (Stock diameter was 1.125")

Just think what it would hold if we upgrade to the legal filler neck size of 3" ;)

ohhh no hating... we are going to address slow fill rate on the new build as well. 😁

I didn't sense that at all. Good job. Take advantage of everything that's allowed!

btw - a 3" tube almost doubles the capacity of the 2.25" we're using.
