The bigger question - any known stations to avoid? Or just go for newer construction as a general rule?

The closer stations, non name, are like any other non name station, you really don't know the quality you are getting. The closest name brand station is the BP on the way back into Danville. The two highest traffic stations in the area are the Speedway and Pilot right next the US 29/58 intersection.

This is where I usually get fuel, purely based on price and a good history.  The pilot next door I had bad fuel from once.

Speedway

1264 South Boston Rd, Danville, VA 24540

the closest ethanol free is probably on Hyco, but I don’t remember for sure.

9500 Semora Rd, Leasburg, NC 27291

Were you getting fuel during or right after (3-4 hours) fuel was delivered? If you were that could explain the bad fuel as that really stirs up the trash that builds up in the tank. I have done that before and car ran horrible afterwards.
