Cage: A-pillar connected to floor instead of rocker panel?

Yes your are correct. Plates for cage mounts should have multiple place planes of attachment.

Would it be easy to also attach the cage to the rocker panel? What is the preferred method, weld directly from the tube onto the rocker? Or build a box around the tube that attaches to the rocker?

Our builder spent some time making sure the floor was sturdy, added some extra tubing. We added the extra spreader plates at a later time to comply with Lemons, not sure how much strength they add.

(Apologize for the crap photo, car is super dirty)

This is exact same car  (280zx) but another cage build:

Here the builder added it to the rocker instead. Would you say this is preferred?

Hi,

Our roll cage attaches to the floor pan instead of the rocker panel. It seems like this is common.

Wouldn't this be much less safe than to the rocker panels? It feels like the floor could be punched out in a violent crash. Specially in older cars that might have some rust.

I believe this is what you are looking for... (google roll cage build and you will have hours of entertainment on what to do and what not to do)

Edit: side note - you shouldn't probably be attaching the cage to anything rusty  :)

One of the first pics in that google link takes you to this thread... good discussion here:

(and another reason to preserve old forum picture uploads......)

Thanks!

This is what i want to avoid:

They had a cage but it punched thru the floor. However I thought all modern cars could safely roll? I guess i was wrong.

Thia seems like an accepted solution, it would work well on pur car:

Doesn't look that expensive either.

Thanks!

I remember seeing that mustang crash discussed somewhere on the interwebz, I *think* it was either a bolt-in cage, or a bolt-in cage that was then welded but without proper plating. There was something to that incident and the quality or lack of detail on the cage install. But yes, that is definitely not a good thing.

Deeper in that old thread I posted, the topic of having the lower door bar touch or overhang the sill is also mentioned which is good for keeping the cage from getting to the point of that blue mustang. In that thread I also linked the corner carvers forum with literally pages of cage building. Good stuff in there.

our new build is done to the boxed rocker panels rather than the paper thin floor.  its also attached in the rear to the shock towers due to them being triple thick steel (thanks ford!)   Back in the day I installed a roll cage in my old Shelby GLHS and it was just plated to the floor, i'm willing to bet it wasn't very safe after studying a lot of cars that wrecked with cages in them.

And how is the box connected to the rocker? What is the mating surface? Like a 4x4" plate?
