Alchemy Autosport
Soooo long story short, we need a new car after contact at Laguna. I found this car I really like but the cage has me unsure... The biggest thing is where the main hoop attaches to the body, which in this car is on the semi-vertical back wall of the miata rather than down to the floor. I dont see anything in the rules that would make this illegal but I am not sure how I feel about it. What opinions do you all have about it? These are the only pics I have so far, I will post more as I get them, THANKS!!!:
wvumtnbkr
My cage is welded to that same sort of bulkhead in the RX7. It is a MUCH stronger area than the flat floor. Never had a problem passing tech. That being said, the rx7 has this spot MUCh closer to the floor than this car apparently (based on this picture). Are the door bars and the main hoop diagonal actually attached to the main hoop? I think they need to be.

I think they need to be. I *think* they are, on that pass side. It looks like that lower door bar meets the main hoop at the point its welded to the body. Good to hear that you have a similar setup and its never had a problem with tech. Why do you say that it is a MUCH stronger area than the flat floor? I agree, but I want to hear why you think so. Thanks!
JDChristianson
I would want the dash bar above the steering column That looks like an ouwwy waiting to happen. Tell them you but it but for a bunch off to fix that stuff.. Weather you fix it or not 100% agree, thats an easy fix tho. We dont love this cage but the rest of the car is perfect and has all of the major changes we made to our car, 1999 engine/diff in an NA, and a bunch more already done so we figure its easier to fix the cage then have to swap wiring harnesses etc and deal with the troubleshooting. If the main hoop and back stays are good then I am pretty happy with cutting out the front half and putting in new tubes. I dont love how far back the front down bars are. Ours are currently in front of the door opening...

Because in the RX7, there are all sorts of compound shapes to distribute the loads on many different planes from this support structure. The floor is one plane and can punch right through. Also, it is literally stronger steel in this section (of the RX7) than the floor.

Weather you fix it or not I put the dash bars above the steering column, but see people racing with the bar below the column like in these images all the time. wvumtnbkr
Not my car, but you can clearly see the rigid area where the main hoop is mounted in the RX7. My car is similarly mounted. However, I have more spreader plate that catches more than 1 plane.

I love black and gold! #2: So you still have that tube landing on a plane that is perpendicular to the tube though, yea?
Bremsen
Just for another point of reference, our car has the same sort of shelf. I know ours is stronger because its the top side of the factory spring mount. Also, my lower sill bar lands onto the vertical of that shelf since its below the lowest point of the main hoop. Indysupra
C4 Corvette is another car like this. I do think there should be some uprights between the door bars with it having that bend in it.
