Rodger Coan-Burningham
I counted three fires maybe four that the fire crews responded to. This one was at pit in. I did not hear what car it started from but the grass along the pit entrance caught fire. My personal race report: I did not have a car in this event so Scott asked me to drive with Cone Crushers as they were down a couple of their normal drivers. Plan was for me to drive third and sixth stints. Shortly before I was to go in Rich called in with fire in the car but was right at pit in and wheeled it in to the pits. Thanks for the quick response by the teams near pit lane entrance jumped the wall with their gear and helped get the car out. I know we repaid one fire extinguisher so if there is someone else hit us up to get you a good fire extinguisher. Rich was fine and the car has minimal damage of wiring and such. But, that ended our day. After it was clear we were done, Huggy said I have a stint in my car if you want it. I was like yeah I came to race so count me in. I drove the 2-4pm stint for him. Came in with the lead since James’ car, who had a big lead when I got in, had engine trouble. Chris and Chip took it from there and brought it home for the win. Unexpected to drive with them at the start of the day but glad to have a small hand in them getting the big trophy. I am sure Chris will write a full report when he gets home. Its always a pleasure to hang with those guys, especially if it ends like it did this weekend. Thanks to the staff for a great weekend. Chris Shay
This was a fun race to watch / listen to on the stream! Lots of action going on. Great live stream that gets better every event! Not Banned Yet with a FTD of 1:37.887! An improvement over their 1:38.4 FTD last year. Nice lead until the engine let go. Danger Racing holding top three till their motor went. Bio Hazard working pit strategy to come back with a strong finish. I saw orange cars cars sideways in other peoples in car videos a lot. Parts Badger taking second with just a few races under their belt! Congrats to pinkies out on the win!

Those cars didn't have a dent on them when they showed up a couple years ago, look at them now.

Racer28173
I saw orange cars in the dirt a lot, just in the live streams (I wasn’t at the race). I’m pretty sure the 107 was off twice in T1 within a single stint (4 off and then at least 2 off). The problem with two nearly identical cars is that you can’t tell them apart and I think that magnifies the perception that they keep screwing up (particularly since they seem to do it a lot with both cars at some races). 1
Indysupra
I am interested it what caused the fires. Sucks that it happened but good info to pass along to other teams.

cnewman92
One of the other fires was a jug catching fire, up around pit 15 or so. Not sure what caused it to ignite.
Racer28173
Just curious - was there any action in impound, or was it protest-free?
cowboys647
I didn’t stay the whole time at impound but parts badger had to take the intake manifold and valve cover off and I believe they were taking the cams off when I left. Impressive run by their team.

Nothing found with the miata and it was called official with no dq’s at the end of the impound period. 2

The only question I had was to the height of the wing and if it was within the 12” rule with the end plates. But obviously they were way faster than me because of driving and not a wing that’s a few inches taller. Congrats to everyone that podiumed. It was a clean race for us and nearly all the cars showed us (love racing) plenty of room and respect.
Darth Turbo
Hey guys, figured I would post up our recap of the race. But first I just want to say thanks to all the staff at Champcar for putting on a great event! We had an all new experience in tech, and I was impressed with the willingness to inspect cars in impound. In my opinion, this is the way forward for our series, it is different but we all have to deal with it the same. Now about our race, we were able to make the 2-hour pit strategy work, we finished 9th overall. We started towards the back and climbed our way to the top ten. in my last stint, I had contact with the Crowd Control Mustang in turn 3, I got black flagged a few laps later. watch the video. We lost some time that the officials gave us back. that is why you may have seen the change of positions with Brew Crew for 9th and 10th towards the end. and I have to say my mr2 had a hard time keeping up with some of the new builds. the level of competition has certainly increased. the series is evolving and I will be excited to compete in Champcar in 2019. the incident at turn 3 is at 4:49.00 the conversation with the martial was at 5:14 I am interested to hear opinions on the incident.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJVtTBbH_0g&t=20865s Edited February 10, 2019 by Darth Turbo
MoparBoyy
Great race for Crowd Control and inActiv motorsports. We were in the lead when we made a judgement call near the safety truck that got us penalized. We took our lumps and kept trucking and were able get it back into 3rd overall. Pulled the video during a stop and presented it to race control, they agreed it wasn't as bad as described at the time. Thats racing, we'll learn and move on. Our rental mazda also did fantastic with a full lineup of new drivers into the Mazda none of them had a bad time, 1st in class and 15th overall. Always a great race when both of your cars are in impound and you come home with some new hardware!

If you got your time back what is the issue? Did your driver know that there was another car back there? Pretty far off line and Crowd Control May have Ben expecting you to stay out there. As as far as builds. Yes, cars are getting faster, but drivers are as well. I know i picked up at least 3 seconds from last year at Road Atlanta. Some of that is car changes, some of it is driver.
Darth Turbo
I was in the car, there were 2 cars behind me and it can be tricky to see behind at night. I wonder if anyone else has footage? I was a bit mad when they black flagged me for it, but In the end, I'm not upset. my car only has some minor scuff marks and they gave the time back. It could have been a lot worse. I think they could have found my team and asked them about it instead of pulling me from the race. I just thought it was worth mentioning since it was a bit strange how it all played out. officially i think they ruled it a racing incident. Crowd control could probably argue that I moved over on them. I'm not trying to start anything. Mostly just trying to explain to those watching the race cast what happened with the timing at the end.
cnewman92
Seemed like there were a lot of calls made that might have been incorrect. We got tagged twice for passes under yellow that we didn’t make after reviewing the video. Like Jay said, they can only act upon what is called in, and I certainly don’t fault them, but I can’t help but wonder about the experience of the flangers manning the stations yesterday. I'm glad you didn't have any significant damage. That being said, I'm not sure I'd recommend closing the door in situations like that. That turn is one where there is a BIG difference in where cars brake and how much curb they decide to take on the inside. Had that been a daytime situation, I'm sure that you would have seen him and the two of you would have gone through there side by side (at least for the first part of the turn). At night, it is really hard to figure out what someone''s intentions are. A good rule of thumb is to assume that headlights that weren't anywhere near close to you on the last straight are probably coming fast. Leaving a lane open through 3 when there is a rapidly closing car is a good idea in those situations. The rules don't require it, but it keeps the fenders and doors straight. I'm glad you got your lap back.
MPRLkld
Attrition seemed bad this year. We fell out in hour five with a trail of hydraulic fluid coming from the clutch slave. Turns out the throw out bearing came apart and the plastic bits sort of melted on the input shaft. The metal parts just scattered everywhere. oddcarnut
The Chandler School kids had a good day at the track and extend their thanks to all that visited the hot chocolate stand and generously donated to the program. I had fun during my striating stint in Rat and coaching a few of our other guys, Overall tough weekend as one car spun and nailed our other car, both continued after some fender adjustments, until well into the race. Ultimately Rat decide to spit out the motor oil, fortunately noticed by the driver, so we think the motor will have survived. And Gator thought 4th & 5th were not appropriate for use in the dark...the kids now have a bit of unplanned maintenance to complete! As always many thank to the Champ staff and track workers.
