The inside of a Chrysler 62te trans 😂

Recommended Posts

It started clunking about 80k miles. Reverse pretty much completely gone by 110k and just now decided to work on it at 133k. Has the standard low drum failure with both pistons seals torn the sprag completely poop itself ....😎 belive it or not the van still got about 24 mpg on the highway. None on the pieces made it down to the pan. All the bearings were completely toast. Worst bearing wear I’ve ever seen but a couple guys at work said they seen worse.

Honestly, I should probably be amazed it it didn't grenade itself for the 30,000 plus miles I put on it after it became mortally ill..... By the end it had a very distinctive whine as it came up through 1st and 2nd and it got to where road noise failed to drown it out.    I finally figured I better take it apart or there wouldn't be much left to rebuild lol.  The thing has 8 tapered roller bearings in it plus about 12 or 13 miniature  bearing sets...  I never had a C4 or TH350 apart but this thing has more stuff in it than any trans I've ever messed with!.  It makes a top loader seem like a 10 piece Lego set... oh wait, I forgot the TL is pretty much a 10 piece Lego set!  lol.  Wish me luck, I have one more bearing to track down..  They make it impossible to x-reference because they list em all with Chrysler part numbers even though when you pull em out they are mostly Timken with a couple of oddballs...

Yeah, well, what's with all these oddball sized  freakin bearings in this dude? lol  At least I can replace the china brgs with Timken USA and National Japan......  Going to be fun making sure I have correct preload though....  :)

Why not just buy the hard parts in kit from?

I should have although I'm not sure I actually found a master kit that had all the roller bearings in it.  I got the one with all the clutch packs and seals and bought the upgraded low drum.  Even that kit was nearly $300 and the drum about $100.  There are 8 unique tapered roller bearings plus all the little tiny flat needle thrust bearings and then several plastic caged needles. It actually doesn't really seem to bad to work on just a lot of parts so a lot of opportunity for errors lol.  I guess the other reason I'm making it hard on myself with the bearings is they are considerably cheaper to identify match and then buy versus just buying from the moparparts vendor. :)  Guess I am hard headed... Why else would I be interested in a V8 Champcar :D
