pintodave
Figured I'd start a dedicated thread for this nonsense, as @Team Infiniti mentioned in another thread, looks like a couple of us are partaking in some good ol redneck shenanigans the weekend after Sebring at New Smyrna Speedway. Thought it would be fun to document it all in one dedicated thread. I plan on multiple cameras in-car and will put a video together. I procured a Neon from a fellow Champcar racer - thanks @TurboFox for enabling my bad habits, Stacey thanks you. I managed to already spend 1/5th of the purchase price on vinyl graphics - she gonna be purdy $50 to enter, pays top 3: 2500/1000/500 in addition there will be other events like a demo derby, spectator racing, and I think a couple other things. If any other Champer's in C. FL aren't busy, it should be a hoot and I'm sure the kids will love it. pintodave
@Team Infiniti How do you plan on whipping up a window net mount? Bottom side attached via flat bar bolted to door, top side mount and latch attached to door or to roof structure? I am thinking roof structure... Team Infiniti
Much of our "engineering" is based on available structure, self preservation/common sense, and stuff laying around. Never know, it may wind up simply attached to the window frame, egress might be out the passenger window. They are not real strict, I will let you know after its done. I just looked at the Neon - built for speed, no top door frame
Team Infiniti
Looking @ my steed, stripping will be easy, this POS was never really equipped, tossing the backseat will practically make this thing empty with minimal effort.

67Mustang
19 minutes ago, mender said: 4 or 6 cylinder only. I was thinking of this guy, but maybe it would not really count being a fill in engine.... very good catch.. LC4[edit] In response to rising gas prices, a larger 252 cu in (4.1 L) version of the 3.8 liter LD5 V6 was produced from 1980 through 1984 and marketed as an alternative to a V8. The bore was enlarged to 3.965 in (100.7 mm), yielding an output of 125 hp (93 kW) and 205 lb⋅ft (278 N⋅m). This engine was used in many large rear-wheel drive Buicks, and in some models from each of GM's other divisions, including Cadillac which offered the "big" Buick V6 in several models from 1980 to 1982 as a credit option to the troublesome V8-6-4 engine used in 1981 and early versions of the aluminum-block Cadillac HT-4100 V8 introduced in 1982. It was also the standard powerplant in the front-drive Riviera and Olds Toronado from 1981 to 1984. Additionally, the 4.1 block was used unsuccessfully at Indianapolis for racing. Its only weakness was the intake valve seals. This was the first naturally aspirated GM V-6 to feature a 4-barrel carburetor.
mender
That manifold was the hot trick for Buick V6s at the time. I also had a 3.8 turbo and the bolt-on 4 bbl adapter for quite a few years. Might be worth something now!

Team Infiniti
Whelp, I just called the promoter then tech guy, seems they feel racing costs have gotten out of hand and want a "reset". Sounds vaguely familiar... When asking about prep I was told "safety only" 4 point non structural cage optional, racing seat optional, remove glass, bar behind doors mandatory, chain/weld doors and that is it. I say window regulators, he smugly asks if that is a safety item...sooo... car prep is going to be pretty simple, good thing as this will be a 4 day build after returning from Sebring Its possible this will be a 50-100 car field. @pintodave It has started, tossed out the spare tire cover and surrounding plastic then drove it home last night, poured 5 gal of hurricane fuel in it then transported 15 gal of hurricane fuel back to sharky. Mechanically all I need is a RR wheel bearing. 1

I'd love to see a 4.6 class catch on around these parts, both asphalt and dirt. I plan on talking them up on more budget racing. I've been holding my breath for 10+ years that the circle tracks would smarten up, so I will remain cautiously optimistic. For the cage, I will play with seat position (hopefully Thurs after Camaro is buttoned up), I am not sure if I can comfortably get the seat far enough fwd for the B-pillar bar w/o eating the steering wheel. If not I am thinking main hoop with drag-style door bars, super KISS yet a little extra safety. I have a spare seat I'd really like to mount so I can run the HANS. Cam Benty
Man......you 2 Hooligans got me thinking how I can get to Florida and knock hell out of a few fenders. I know a few of our Champ Sophisticates would not lower themselves and participate in such a gauche form of racing. If they would they may sell their road race cars and attend Betty Ford to rid there Enduro addiction!! Best set of luck and trade paint!!!! 8 hours ago, pintodave said: Well that is good, sounds like they are committed to keeping it "stock" as they keep preaching it. We shall see!!! Team Infiniti
Headliner and everything behind driver seat is now dumpster filler, yesterday started looking at a pre-made rollbar hoop that has been kicking around the backyard... BeastZ06
Do you guys think the blue one is too good for this race? The rear window has already been removed, the car is complete except for a battery and throttle cable right now. Explain a “2x2 safety bar”? I would really like a harness, seat and a HANS. Do you think I could just weld in a harness bar between the b-pillars or would I have to build a real 4 pt cage?

Do you think I could just weld in a harness bar between the b-pillars or would I have to build a real 4 pt cage? How tall are you? I'm 5-11, maybe 6-0 on a low gravity day and there is no way I can get the seat far enough fwd to get a bar behind me. Spoke with tech a couple hours ago, said I could put a jog in the bar to get some seat clearance. I also ran the idea of a main hoop with single angled door bar per side (like a drag cage) and he was cool with that. As long as the cage isn't over built to the point of stiffening it up he sounded ok with it, they are harping on stock. Edit: I'm also putting in a seat so I can run my hans. He also said you were allowed to run a 5-point with the b-pillar bar if you want. I wouldn't bring the blue car, it looks fast Edited September 24, 2019 by pintodave
Team Infiniti
Taking the safety rules as far as allowed, we have finally found a use for the mustang drag drag cage that I acquired 5 years ago, it required only a minute of hammer modification to fit the Focus. So far this race is $0 (car was free) Whats next to do: Finish drivers door/down bar Figure out if a race seat will work Install 5 pt. harness Change P/S fluid Oh, in typical form, I drove it home after the main hoop was installed Edited September 24, 2019 by Team Infiniti
