Happy New Year to everyone, and welcome to the 2021 ChampCar iRacing Series. We experienced strong growth in 2020, and entering our fourth year we are excited to continue serving the ChampCar community and attracting new membership to real life endurance racing. Following strongly positive feedback from the community in 2020, there will be only minor adjustments in format for the 2021 season, and these are all detailed below. The first championship round of the season will take place at Road Atlanta on February 10th, with the first practice round on February 3rd. There will be a "just for fun" pre-season race hosted on January 27th in order to welcome in the new season and introduce interested members to the community.

Season

There will be 16 rounds in the 2021 CCiS season, designed to match real world CCES calendar as closely as possible using tracks available on iRacing. Each round will consist of one practice round (for which no points are awarded) and one official round. Sessions will be 4 hours in length, starting at 6:30pm (Eastern) on Wednesday evenings. These will consist of 2 hours of open practice, 1 hour of open qualifying (starting at 8:30pm ET), and a one hour race (starting at 9:30pm ET). Please note that this is 30 minutes earlier than the 2020 season. Championship rounds will have an iRacing License/Safety requirement of D/2.0. The calendar for the championship races can be seen below, the practice races for each round will take place one week prior. Attached to this post is a one page printout with all relevant dates. All championship rounds will be broadcast live on YouTube by the HJBC (link at bottom).

Tracks

The 2021 CCiS season will feature all the available iRacing tracks that are in use on the 2021 CCES season, with race dates close to their real world counterparts. In order to make up a full 16 round season, we will also be using the 3 tracks that received the highest number of community votes for non-CCES tracks that members wanted to see included. These will be Lime Rock, COTA, and Long Beach. In addition, there will be a few "just-for-fun" races scattered between official championship rounds that will take place at circuits around the world. The first of these will be at Bathurst on January 27th, with more to follow if this format is enjoyed by the community.

Cars

We are retaining the same rotation of 3 different cars to be used throughout the season, with each race being single class/car. The 2020 end of year survey revealed that the Solstice was by far the least liked car that was used in the season, and so this will be replaced for the 2021 season. In a textbook example of "be careful what you wish for", the new car to be introduced this season will be the iRacing Volkswagen Jetta. Further diversifying the CCiS with our first ever FWD vehicle, this will provide a unique challenge with close racing and lift-off oversteer sure to entertain! The Mazda Miata NC Cup and Street Stock will remain, with fixed setups and limited fuel as before that will force a pit stop strategy for the race.

Scoring and Prizes

The championship points format is unchanged, 50-46-42-39-36-34-32-31….. down to 1pt for 38th. There will be 4 drop weeks for the 2021 season, meaning that each drivers best 12 points scores will count towards their championship points total. To be eligible for points at each round, you must complete more than 50% of the total race distance (over half the total number of laps as completed by the round winner). There are no bonus points for pole position or fastest lap.

The overall championship winner will receive CCES entry or driver credit up to $1500 in value, to be redeemed in the 2022 CCES season. Second and Third overall will receive coveted CCES trophies, similar to those received by podium finishers at a real event. To receive your trophy, you will need to attend a 2022 CCES event in any capacity (driver, team member, volunteer) and arrange delivery with Doc. A second prize of up to $1500 credit will be awarded to one driver who completes the series participation requirement. To meet this requirement, drivers must complete over 50% race distance in 12 or more rounds of the 2020 season. All drivers who have met this requirement at the end of the season will be placed in a pool and the winner of the prize will be randomly selected by the CCES BoD.

In addition to the grand prizes, I am pleased to announce the introduction of the "Hugh Jass Clean Racer" prize, which will be awarded to 4 competitors this season. The schedule will be partitioned into 4 mini-seasons (rounds 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16). For drivers who compete in all 4 of the rounds in the mini-season, a "HJ Factor" will be calculated. The HJ factor is the number of positions gained (starting position-finishing position), divided by the total number of incidents. The driver with the highest HJ Factor value (most positions gained per incident) will be the winner for that mini-season, and will receive a customised Hugh Jass t-shirt that will be the envy of ChampCar racers everywhere.

How to Enter

To enter the 2021 CCiS, you must have an active iRacing subscription, and apply to the league using the link at the bottom of this post. Once accepted into the league, upcoming scheduled sessions will show up under the "League Sessions" tab of the iRacing homepage. Registration for each race session is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please also join the league Discord server (also linked below) for banter during race sessions and for easy communication to all league members.

Please let me know if there are any more questions regarding the season, and I look forward to seeing plenty of racers on the grid for Round 1.

Can we start a petition to run the ND Miata instead of the NC?

As soon as the base ND is not a 500pt car out of the box. An ND Cup car would be way over 500pts. There has been ND Cup cars that have run in ChampCar, but they were all EC

so does that mean I can bring my street stock to a RL champ event and be under 500 points??

Bill Riley has been operating on that principle in 2020, let's see how the comparative lap times stack up at Road America!

I had no idea that these models were called NC and ND until recently.

No doubt the street stock would get penalty laps but we would all have the same amount of penalty laps.

If iRacing had a lower HP spirit of ChampCar type D class car I'm sure we'd be running it.

What kind of times have people been running at VIR in that trashy Jetta?

Trashy lol - yes it has its quirks.

I put in about 25-30 laps of testing and got to 1:18.7.  I figure the leaders will be at least low 1:17 and probably 1:16 with this car.

In the 2020 race at VIR south the best the Solstice could do was 1:19.9.

I forgot all about this.  What is the status of these prizes?
