Racer28173
Great race to watch from home. I was so glad it wasn’t Parc Ferme. So many teams had issues on Saturday - Sunday would have been a complete yawn. The other huge benefit to two days of racing is two impounds. It gave teams two opportunities to look at what might explain the 2:43 LapTimes with only minimal reduction in stint time. Oh crud. I bet I just accidentally started another argument by giving my race report from the recliner. Please just like or do the confused look (or sad look) if you don’t like these points - let’s not have another debate until at least one page of reports and videos! Timothy G. Elliott
Well 2 Idiot's and a Garage, Sheboygan Auto Helpers, had an interesting race weekend, first I wish to thank all the drivers, it was hectic pointing you all by so often but again you showed how good you all are, not a single mark on the car, being the slowest car out there Sunday I'm sure was annoying to most of you, but you all showed us why it's such an honor to race with you all. With that said I can fill in what we were dealing with, the car was much faster cornering with the Aero mods, Friday we got to see that, until our shifter linkage decided to slip out of the shaft leaving me with 3rd and 4th only, after replacing it with another one I had it decided again near the end of the day to do it again, a run over to my stepsons house and I found a good used one went back to the track and installed it for Saturday, after starting Saturday a few laps later my boss Mark radios in that it's lost power not teaching up well in 4th and 5th especially, came into the pits and I found one of the wide open throttle switch wires had come off, put back on and sent him back out for about a lap it ran good but back to no power after that, came back in and double checked the WOT switch. No issue so sent him back out ran good for about a lap again and came back in had him bring it to paddock this time found wire off again but knew there was another issue going on fixed the wire where it couldn't come off again and decided that we were dealing with a fuel issue so took out surge tank and replaced the fuel pump, back out on track and ran a lap and then same thing, this went on most the day, with no resolution, we replaced the coil, distributor, a couple of wire connectors then since the race was almost over I had Mark drive the last 6 laps to the checker, he felt better that it would keep running so we decided Sunday morning to run it untill it wouldn't any more, Mark started and ran a full 2 hour stint, then I did 2, then he decided to just do 1.5 and let me do the last 1.5. It was nice to finish, but no idea what the issue was, I have a few ideas now, but have left it in the trailer and will for a few weeks as punishment anyway! I do know we're racing in the right series and look forward to running more when we can. Thank you Champcar, and all the teams again for a very fine racing experience!
Ian
Finndurance Motorsports race report. The team got together a few weeks ago and woke the car up from it's winter hibernation. We made a few small setup changes based on the cars first event, the Frozen Rotors Grand Prix. New pads, more camber, and a welded rear diff to stop the inside rear tire from turning to smoke in 5, 8, the bends, and sometimes Canada. At the track, the test day went well. We were all still short shifting the car a bit, just like we did at the fall race. We kept the revs below 6500 to keep oil temps in check. Even with an oil cooler, it still quickly climbs over 280° when thrashed. Testing went well, no major issues, and our new rental driver worked to get comfortable in the car. Saturday started chilly. I got voted first in the car, so I strapped in. There wasn't much strategy discussion, but with 5 penalty laps to make up, taking it easy wasn't going to cut it. Between the champ contenders being seeded first, and our pit stall location, I started like 3rd from the back of the field. Thems the ropes though, so when the green flag flew I licked to stamp, and I sent it. Once I had the tires up to temp, I worked my laps into low 2:50s and tried to stay consistent with working traffic. Had some really good battling with the 927 mustang and the Burningham car. When Premium Dudes big leak brought out the pace car, I was 2 cars back from 108. As the track went back to green I was looking foreword to some clean laps, but it wasn't meant to be. I only made it a few laps before the car sputtered hard coming out of 5 and I had to limp the car around, barely made it. Stuffed a new driver in the car, and gassed it and sent him out with instructions to short shift a bit. He had a relatively uneventful stint, but he also only made it 1:50 on fuel, meaning we were going to need a 4th stop. 3rd driver in, he's had a few laps at RA in a low power Miata, but is otherwise pretty green. He's not even out 2 laps when two cars split an entire exhaust system laying mid track entering the bend. He had no chance to avoid it. There was no major damage to the car, but his nerves were shot, and he never found his groove during his stint. He came in, and the last driver went in. With the penalty laps finally starting to get worked out, he climbed the car to 13th overall, and after a gas and go with 30 minutes left, he took the checkers. Post race we discovered a nasty gash in one of the tires we attribute to the exhaust impact. This along with the fact that they're nearing the end of their life, and the last driver complained that the tires were going away, we decided to put on the backup tires which happen to be older, taller, and narrower. Sunday started much the same, but without a need to go 2 hours we were all planning to go full send instead of fuel saving. We reversed driver order and the first 2 stints were uneventful. 3rd driver in the car and things were swell until he looped the car coming out of Canada. He seems to think there was something on the surface since the car spun so suddenly with the wheels nearly straight. Watching the in car clip on the way home doesn't show anything, but the spin is so abrubt I wonder if he's correct. It really doesn't matter at this point. It took a while for the tow truck to get it back to the paddock, but once there, we sliced off the chunk of rear bumper that was touching the tire and did a cursory inspection of the car. Nothing visibly bent, but I noticed the front brake pads were very nearly shot. After my big crash at RA a few years ago, we decided to change them before I got in the car and headed back out to at least have some fun. With 2 hours left in the race I went out and enjoyed some great racing with the blue/yellow MiElan car and some others. The suspension is definitely tweaked. The steering wheel is a bit crooked, and it was a bit spooky hard braking and turning right, but otherwise seemed ok. With 20 minutes to go, I needed fuel, so I came in and we sent the driver who spun back out. Good to get right back on the horse, and he told the checkers with us in 24th. With a long tow home we loaded up and rolled out before and the drama unfolded in impound. Huge congrats to Rbank on being No. 1 now, and congrats to Premium Dudes on the Sunday Win. Glad to see the new setup is finally getting the bugs sorted. I have a list of changes to the G that will hopefully help chip away at all those penalty laps. Great racing with y'all as always Edited April 21, 2021 by Ian I had Tuttle proofread for me.

Gkuhn41
Two Brothers had a rather uneventful weekend lol. Saturday I started the race somewhere around P10. Almost got ran over at that fabulous start. I put in my 2 hours only incident was my first time hitting fresh oil as i had to be in the first 5 cars behind premium dudes. Turn into 6 and the car heads straight ohhhhh boy. Did some agricultural racing but no damage. Was able to send some flyers after the fuel we saved. The rest of the day went with out much problem until the end. With about 30 minutes left Matt was driving and picked up a odd feeling in the left side of the car. Said it just felt weird and was making a noise. We talked and running P6 if we came in and looked it over quick enough we might be able to get out before MiElan got past us. We were wrong, oh well we wanted to make sure we didn’t ruin our shot at a chance to compete for the Chip. We came home P7. After we found or left rear with a screw in it and down to 12lbs, and also the front strut worked loose (the noise he heard). Sunday Matt started, we decided we were going to send the car as hard as we could for 7 hours and see what happened. Matt set his fastest lap ever running with Crank Yankees and the 901 car. Mike got in and was making what i think were his best laps ever in the car, seeing the progress he was making we decided to keep him in as long as possible who cares in the big picture about time if a guy is sending it and doing well let him do his thing. Great work on Mike! I took third stint and tried to drive qualifying laps for my hour and a half. On the last lap i though i would have enough room on the outside of the little VW to sneak by in the carousel. He washed out a bit and I didn’t have enough reserve wheel left and shot off drivers right. Totally my fault for sending it hard on the outside so i apologize to him and the red BMW for probably giving you a heart attack. No damage thankfully and i handed the car over to Andy. Andy went out and ripped great laps for 1:15 and then said the voltage light was flashing again, and the car wasn’t quite up to full song. With only 10 minutes left we just told him to go super easy and coast to the finish where we finished P6. For the first time we had the trailer packed and ready to go BEFORE the car got off the track so we could load it up and get Matt on his way since he had family matters at home to tend to. We loaded the car and sent him on his way, grabbed a case of beer and watched the show. Overall it was a successful weekend for us. We came to our home track and completed as many laps as i think we could have given the circumstances. Were happy with a 7th and a 6th. We were pit neighbors with MiElan and shared a great number of conversations over the weekend, shared several beers with folks and even had some “real Alabama beer” thanks to the Birmingham guys. I appreciate the work all the volunteers put in and the work Champcar put in to allow us onto the track. We can all piss and moan about whatever but at the end of the day we need to be out here to have some fun and our group had that, so thanks to everyone who helped us along the way. We have some work to do but were hoping we see everyone @ Autobahn in a few months!
eyeballs19
901 Motorsports brought a knife to a gunfight, broke all kinds of stuff, but had a great weekend anyway. We knew the #901 e30 was not ideal for Road America, but we were excited to see what we could do. We had a strong driver lineup, the car is bulletproof (normally), and we thought we could stretch fuel to get 2hrs out of a tank. And it was the Championship so we were going to go flat out! Well, Friday was humbling as we realized the fastest cars were 8+ seconds a lap faster, even if we railed the corners and pounded the car over curbs that rattled teeth. We all got a few laps in, and then promptly broke the front subframe in the first afternoon session. The crew did an amazing job stitching it back together using their mad welding skills, and we were happy that we broke on the test day rather than during the race. Saturday confirmed that we didn't have pure pace, but we were hanging around 12th and hoping the fuel mileage would help. And then the trouble started. We had a control arm bushing fail. Fixed it. Had a brake caliper fail. Fixed it. Had a chunk of plastic break free and get under the driver's feet. Fixed it. Wow. 3 unplanned stops. We were in 34th. Oh well. So we settled in to turn laps and enjoy the track. We pushed every lap but tried to stay off the curbs of death. Worked back to 12th by the end and felt surprisingly good about the day. Sunday we had the honor of leading the field to the green flag. Premium Dudes were nice enough to let us lead for about 1.5 seconds before they rocketed into the distance (congrats, BTW!) but we were good on cold tires and able to stay near the front for a couple laps before the higher power contenders gobbled us up. But the race was going pretty well. We ended the first stint in 5th, the second stint in 8th, third stint in 8th. We sent the last driver out thinking that we had a shot at 5th or 6th since we were done fueling. Well... the car made it two corners before it made a crazy left turn under braking and shot into the gravel. Broken rear subframe. Two hour fix with roughly an hour left in the race. We were done. 19th. Not perfect races for us, but was a great weekend. Beautiful weather, fun battles on track, some good meals in Elkhart Lake, some Spotted Cow beer. Hard to complain about that. tneker
After turning no laps in 2020 thanks to Covid, the #55 Udder Chaos Dodge Neon finally made it out of the trailer and provided us (three person team of Kent, Dave and Rainer) with just what the doctor ordered - maximum amount of smiles per mile. On Friday we had to chase down a bad connector on our alternator and 2021 tech found a handful of things that had not surfaced in the 5 years of previous inspections, but that is a good thing because they were all safety related and that's something we are happy to get extra eyes on. Despite these challenges, all three of us got a chance to knock some rust off the car or probably more appropriately stated we knocked some rust off ourselves with some track time on Friday. After several years of campaigning a Neon, history has both provided plenty of lessons learned to build on, and has also kept our expectations for flawless reliability in check. The only significant challenge we had all weekend was an apparent fuel pickup issue on our OEM fuel tank which took our typical meager 90ish minute stint lengths to closer to a horrifically uncompetitive 70 minutes. Other than the extra stops for fuel the car was pretty much matching previous performance levels and most importantly it stayed out of the paddock between the green and checkered flags for both Saturday and Sunday. With the lack of rain (or snow), the fact that we spent our time racing instead of wrenching, and the quality of the on track battles within the race, we will be grinning for weeks. Thanks volunteers, Champcar and fellow chumps, can't wait till the next one.

Technical Advisory Committee Andrew D Johnson Posted April 21, 2021 Technical Advisory Committee Report Share Posted April 21, 2021 Thanks to all the Champstaff and volunteers for a fun event. I thought the driving all weekend was very clean, and all the cars I encountered on track were fun to race. Thanks 90racing.com for getting me some last minute Sparco wheels, the mistake I made was ordering (2) when I should have got (4) or even (6).
frankrehnelt
The finished “fix”. Our man Ruffin did an excellent job. He had to use a screw to fill a gap. He did this with a 110v welder with flux core wire. I don’t have pictures of the rear because we just loader her up but will post some later. The rear broke at the outer swing arm mount on the left side. Edited April 21, 2021 by frankrehnelt 1
LuckyKid
A big congrats to Premium Dudes and RBank. Premium Dudes will be unstoppable if they keep the oil in the engine! We have nothing for RBank, the power is absurd! The Visceral cars are always great performers! MKD is also a powerhouse if they just get new brake pads. We were pitted by Brian and he was a good neighbor, you can fault the guy for many things, but he sure is passionate! PartsBadger - Race Report We believed we tracked the fuel pump issue from NCM to an overheating electrical joint so we up-gauged the entire fuel pump wiring panel and re-did all the joints. There was however some people that mentioned the FPR could be an issue as well, so we moved to a lower flowing external pump, and added a fuel rail with better fuel pressure regulator. During the first few laps of the test day, we had the stall issue happen again, after shaking the harness the issue went away and we knew it was a short. A short time later we get a call that the car lost throttle (we had the throttle cable come of at RA20 and since safety wired everything). The car was towed in and the the throttle cable bracket was in pieces with a jumble of safety wire and the cable was frayed. We fixed it using a 1/4" thick bracket this time, and found our likely short wire and cleaned up some others as well. The first race day went great for about 9 laps and we suddenly lost power, but different from last time. While getting ready to tow back to the paddock I used my foot to check the AUX ECU plug and sure enough, that f'er is loose again (Also an RA20 issue). We lost two laps but were back out. Then after the second stint we lost our alternator. Then the radiator cap came lose in the pits and we had to come in again. Then we lost power AGAIN! This time we found that our main power cable(from the original build) was loose in the terminal. A quick fix and we were back out. Shortly there after we lost a rear brake pad and a caliper burned through a good portion of the piston before losing brake pressure. Another "quick" fix and we finished the day by blowing a differential! The second day was much better. @Chris Shay pounded it into my thick skull that I needed to stay off the rumbles and that the vibration is causing all of these issues to ruin our races. We had a really good 1.5 stints and the transmission started to go. We made the call to keep it in fourth gear and run clean and consistent. We ended up finishing 8th, 7th or 6th (who knows?) A big thank you to my crew (Brandon, Nick, Steve) and our chief mechanic Will who quickly diagnosed my shoddy electrical work, without him we'd still be in the pits. Our pitstops were top notch and we were well prepared! I also dropped a line on the local Miata FB group and had a couple guys come to the track to help get food, fuel, and parts and take pictures, a HUGE help! Thanks Grant and Cal! Summary of issues and what I learned: - Throttle Cable Bracket (Use thicker plate, safety wire, check tension of cable) - Throttle Cable (check for fraying (add to list), keep a spare) - Loose Wires (check shrink tube periodically, use adhesive lined) - ECU Connector (use teflon paste on threads) - Main Power Connections (Purchase the right crimp tools and solder) - Radiator cap (Make sure its not too easy to turn) - Rear Caliper (Follow the freaking checklists, no short cuts!) - Differential/Transmission (Need more air under the car and we need a better heatshield on the exhaust, its cooking everything) - Stay off the gators! Stay off the gators! Stay off the gators! Getting local car guys to come help with food/part runs was the best idea I've had in a while, they had a great time and it was a big help for the team!
