turbogrill
Hi, I don't think I have ever seen a 300zx (Z32) in champcar. I would think they would be pretty good? 220hp, 19 gallons and look cool. Just curious
Administrators Bill Strong Posted August 3, 2021 Administrators Report Share Posted August 3, 2021 There have been many. One races out of Florida and for a long time won everything. Great drivers, great build, and great race prep.
Team Infiniti
They are heavy, like triple firewall heavy, you have to cut them up like you hate it. 1

Great drivers, great build, and great race prep. That was my first ChampCar build, with David Tenney, Kevin Smith and Drew Harvey. We FTD'd everything, but I think only won (Sebring) twice. It was a checker-or-wrecker sort of car. The MOV laps back then didn't help. Great chassis! Lots of available wheel travel means you can get it very low; just flip the top hats upside down. You do need to beef up the rear LCA mounting tabs as they're prone to tearing off the subframe. The motor is meh; about as powerful and reliable as a 2JZ-GE but prone to oil starvation and impossible to work on. I'd love to see one with an SR20 or VQ swap. Anything to get weight off the front. Due to the bad weight distribution it doesn't put down power well in the dry, and in the wet it's complete trash. The brakes work really well if you go with one of the kits that up-sizes the front rotors. The transmissions suck, as they have these little "synchro springs" on gears 3 and 4 which are prone to coming off. There's a fix for this but we keep it a secret - PM me if you're actually going to run one. Maybe just swap Z32 front suspension onto a 240SX; the rear is the same anyhow. Or just do an SC300 and save yourself a lot of pain.
Grant
Also I disagree about having to cut them up like you hate it... While I do indeed hate Z32s, the removal of our's roof was primarily due to when it was built: back when LeMons was adding chicanes into straights. We figured drag didn't matter. If you went full ham on weight reduction I think you could get one as light as ours was with a roof structure, which would give you way more top end. They've got a nice rear hatch which keeps the boundary layer attached all the way down, just like an S13 hatchback. I like the chassis, but not the motor. I was mostly curious, seems like a car you would run if you happen to have it or know it but not something you start fresh with.
